Comenius project meeting in Bulgaria

An Apian-students’ diary (October 2014)

Monday, 20.10.14
When we arrived in Sofia, the principal of the Bulgarian school picked us up at the airport. During the ride to their school we had the chance to see the differences between Germany and Bulgaria. When we got there we had lunch with our hosts in their school canteen. After that there was an opening by the Bulgarians. They performed a traditional dance and welcomed us with typical Bulgarian bread, honey and spice. After they gave us a look at their country in form of a presentation, our hosts took us home and we got to know Sofia better, e.g. some famous churches.

After we met in the morning we set off for our camp which was called Momina Krepost Hotel. During the ride we drove through two other cities (Plovdiv and Stara Zagora) until we arrived at Shipka. Shipka is a place and we went sightseeing on a mountain. On the mountain there was a big tower. To go up was really hard but we had fun because we played a game. We had to count the stairs from the first one until the last (there were 902 steps). The winners were the two boys from Germany so they got a bar of chocolate. After a few hours we arrived in the hostel and we were allowed to go to our rooms. One hour later we played a game together where we had to tell the others some facts about ourselves and then we had typical Bulgarian dinner. In the evening there was a disco and we danced to music from many different countries.

Wednesday, 22.10.14: Visit in Tornovo
We settled off to one of the most beautiful Bulgarian cities: Tornovo. Although the imagination that people fell 70 metres from a wall and die on the rocks below wasn´t that beautiful, we enjoyed visiting the medieval castle. (image 0725) Tornova was the capital of Bulgaria for a long time. In the souvenir shops we realized the importance of roses for the Bulgarian culture. Rose water, Rose oil, Rose shower gel, rose sweets and even Rose Jam.
Back at the Hotel we had fun with a Treasure Hunt. Although my team lost, I still was very happy after the big cake, which was our treasure. (image 0744) So we could go on with games like Potato or countries. And unfortunately we couldn´t make a disco but that didn´t matter that much: We had our own party on the room.

After breakfast we left Momina Krepost. Our next destination was the Dryanovo Cave. A tourist guide showed us the cave where we learnt a lot of things about it. We saw stone animals, for example a horse, a crocodile, a dragon and some more. A superstition is that if you put money on the stone hall (before you must wish for something) and the money doesn’t fall down, the wish comes true. The visit in the outdoor museum “Etara” was unpleasant, because it rained very a lot. Afterwards we had lunch and we said good-bye to the Romanian group. Then we drove back to Sofia and our hosts took us home.

Friday, 24.10.14
On our last day in Bulgaria we could sleep longer in the morning and after breakfast, our host took us to the airport in Sofia. After everybody had arrived we said goodbye to our host and checked in.

The exchange with Bulgaria was an interesting experience because we learned a lot about the country and the culture and made new friends. We also had a lot of fun and we are looking forward to meeting our friends in March.
