“The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde“

Review of the play

Last Monday we watched the “Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde“, written by the Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson, who got the idea of the play while having a nightmare. It was a one-man-show, acted out by the London actor David Davies.

The play is about Dr. Jekyll, who has made a potion that separates the human soul into good and evil, so when he drinks the potion, he splits up into two personalities: the good Dr. Jekyll and the bad Mr. Hyde. At first he can control when swapping characters but after some time the unscrupulous Mr. Hyde takes over whenever he wants to, even at night. While being Mr. Hyde, he kills and hurts a couple of people. After the lawyer Mr. Utterson found out that Mr. Hyde is responsible for the death and he is wanted by the police, Mr. Hyde has to hide. Unfortunately it gets even harder for Dr. Jeckyll to come back as a personality and with him knowing it is going to be the last time he exists, he writes a letter explaining what has happened and blames Mr. Hyde for the murder. The letter ends with the words “I bring the life of that unhappy Henry Jekyll to an end“ and so ends the play.

“The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde“

I found the play very exciting and entertaining. Although the play was in Victorian English, you could easily understand the plot. The actor David Davies acted out really well and it was easy to differ between the characters. He did not only play Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, but he also played a butler and a lawyer, for instance. I think it was really brave of him to act in front of so many people. In my view, he has done a great job because he managed to act differently for every character, spoke clearly, loud and slow enough for us to understand. All in all it was very entertaining, funny and thrilling.
